Torfaen businesses celebrate success at the 2017 Monmouthshire Business Awards

Torfaen businesses have been recognised  at the 2017 Monmouthshire Business Awards. There was a threefold increase in entries for the 2017 awards, which have been expanded this year to cover the ‘old Monmouthshire’ -  Monmouthshire, Newport, Caerleon, Cwmbran, Ebbw Vale, Usk and Caerphilly.

Three  Torfaen businesses won their categories at the awards event  held at the Celtic Manor Resort on Friday 6th October which was attended by more than 350 people and hosted by broadcaster Hywel James.

Cwmavon-based Capital Valley Plastics won the Excellence in Innovation award. Speaking about their award, Roger Phillips, Director said “We are so proud of winning the Excellence in innovation award. Our staff and employees work so hard and it is great to have some recognition for all the effort. Developing  new products is difficult  in today’s world. Winning the award will help promote the business and our products. I would like to thank Torfaen Economy & Enterprise   and Welsh Government for all the support we have had and I’m sure our next phase of development  will be even more exciting.”

The Young Entrepreneur of the Year award was collected by Michael McLeod, Managing Director of UniGreenScheme, based at Mamhilad Park Estate, Pontypool. Michael said “Winning the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award is a big moment for the business and myself. It is a major recognition of our achievements and has given us a real boost especially as we were up against some tough competition."

Blaenafon Cheddar Company, Blaenavon won the Excellence in Small Food and Drink Producers category.

In addition a number of Torfaen businesses were nominated across other categories. These included King’s Financial Services, Pontypool (Best Small Business), Capital Valley Plastics, Cwmavon (Excellence in Manufacturing)  and  The Lion Hotel, Blaenavon  (Hospitality, Travel and Tourism).

Councillor Alan Jones, executive member for business, tourism, leisure and culture, said: “For a small county we punch above our weight when it comes to business, and it is fantastic to see Torfaen businesses being recognised for the high quality of their goods and services. 

“I would like to add my congratulations to all businesses from Torfaen that won awards, and also those who were recognised with nominations.”
